Heat protection products contain essential ingredients and polymers that provide thermal protection. Traditionally such silicon-based polymers being used are dimethicone and amodimethicone, but a lot of products were developed recently by BASF – the world’s largest chemical producing company.

I’ve rounded up a couple of products that you as a person work for a cosmetic company or as a user of their products may be intertested in.


Luviquat Supreme AT 1 adds benefit to styling mousse/foam products by increasing volume and heat protection.

  • It contains copolymer of vinylpyrrolidone, methacrylamide, vinylimidazole and quaternized vinylimidazole
  • Suggested percentages in use for best heat protection effect: 2-3%


Luviset Clear AT 3 is easily competiable with other ingredients and provide effective thermal protection for sprays, mousse and gels. It has longer lasting curl retention compared to standard PVP (Polyvinylpyrrolidone) and VP/VA (Polyvinylpyrrolidone/Vinyl Acetate)

  • Non-ionic polymer
  • INCI: VP / Methacrylamide / Vinyl Imidazole Copolymer
  • The LUVISET® CLEAR AT 3 contains copolymer of vinylpyrrolidone, methacrylamide and vinylimidazole

Keratin Protein Hydrolysate

Sold under the trade name NUTRILAN KERATIN W PP (BASF), this product helps reduce hair damage, strengthen hair.

It contains amino-acid which is found in human hair. Often added to heat protection sprays such as TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Heat Defense Spray it fortifies the hair’s natural properties.

  • Animal Derived Protein
  • INCI: Hydrolyzed Keratin


Ultrahold Power not only provides hair shine and firm hold but protection from heat styling tools such as hair straightener. It has been used as an ingredient in KMS Hair Stay Firm Hairspray and HAIR SPRAY EXTRA STRONG (HACO)

  • Anionic polymer
  • INCI: Acrylates / t-Butylacrylamide Copolymer
